From the Daily Express – Three disabled first in Sabah to get Shell scholarships

July 5, 2011

We thank Shell for their support to the community. Dateline 2011-06-21:

Cerebral palsy-afflicted Mohd Amirul Asyraf of Lahad Datu became Sabah’s first recipient of Shell Malaysia’s Special Excellence Awards for students with physical disabilities.

The 19-year-old former student of SMK Madai in Kunak is among three lucky disabled statewide this year to receive the special category scholarship from the oil and gas company.

Shell Malaysia is also sponsoring the studies of three disabled from the peninsula and four from Sarawak this year to study in local universities.

The special category scholarship was launched initially for students of Sarawak last year in conjunction with Shell’s 100 years of upstream operations in Miri.

From Free Malaysia Today – Sabah, Sarawak may lose oil, gas forever

July 3, 2011

Another reason for East Malaysia to secede.

Dateline 2011-06-17:

Sabah and Sarawak will lose their oil and gas resources “forever” if the Petroleum Act 1974 is not amended, United Borneo Front (UBF) leader, Jeffrey Kitingan, said.

He said that the two states have already experienced “100% losses” of their oil and gas resources under the Petroleum Act.

He added that unless MPs and party leaders in the two states compel the federal government to amend the Act now, the states will “lose forever” their reserves.

From Free Malaysia Today – Diesel costs more in Sabah?

July 2, 2011

Let’s vote to remove the diesel subsidy, and cultivate good energy saving habits.

Dateline 2011-06-16:

As unbelievable as it sounds, diesel costs more in oil-producing Sabah than in near-barren Peninsular Malaysia.

Decrying the withdrawal of fuel subsidies as “particularly unfair” to Sabah and Sarawak, the Federation of Sabah Lorry Transport Associations (FSLTA) said the industry was now forced to increase its charges by as much as 30% to cope with higher costs.

Said association president Steven Chua Pui Ming: “It’s all very confusing. Why is the subsidised diesel price RM1.48 in Sabah but RM1.43 a litre in Peninsular Malaysia?

Reduction Of RON97 Price Proves Government Sensitive To World Oil Prices, Says PDAM

July 1, 2011

HoHoHoHo. Apparently someone has a sense of humour. Too bad they don’t have a sense of irony.

Dateline 2011-06-16:

The Government’s decision to reduce the price of RON97 petrol to RM2.80 a litre is a right and smart move to prove it is sensitive towards the movement of world’s oil prices, said the Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM).

PDAM’s deputy president Datuk Zulkifli Mokti said although the drop was small, the efficient move taken indirectly proved the commitment of the government to lessen the people’s burden in terms of using the fuel.

Shout Out – One Day Course on Corrosion Control of Steel Structures by Cathodic Protection

June 29, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a seminar on the 12th July, 2011. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 6 CPD hours. You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM. They promise up that the elevator will be ready by the next AGM.

Corrosion has been a concern in many industries. Corrosion can cause unexpected failures of structures and can result in huge losses in life, production as well as environmental. It has been reported that corrosion can, on average, causing around 3% of GNP in many industrialized countries.

Cathodic protection (CP) is one of few corrosion protection methods. It has been successfully used to overcome corrosion and extension of service life of structures. The course is aimed to provide the understanding of principle of CP, techniques of CP survey and measurements and interpretation of CP survey data.

The course will introduce you to the following topics:

  •  Principle of Cathodic Protection
  • Type of Cathodic Protection
  • Criteria of Cathodic Protection
  • Electrical Measurement for Cathodic Protection System
  • Special Cathodic Protection Survey Techniques

Mr. Kang Kim Ang, MSc. Corrosion (UMIST. U.K.), Dip. Materials Engineering (TARC), C.Eng., FIMM, Micorr, a Chartered Engineer registered with Engineering Council, UK and the Corrosion Specialist and Cathodic Protection Specialist accredited by National Association of Corrosion Engineer (NACE), USA and Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM).

Engr. Ong Wei Rex, M. Eng. Mechanical (UTM), BSc. Mechanical (Material) Engineering (UTM), Cathodic Protection (CP) Level 2 accredited by National Association of Corrosion Engineer (NACE), USA and CP Technologist Level 2 accredited by Institute of Materials, Malaysia (IMM).

Engr. Ong has over 5 years of experience in corrosion control, Cathodic Protection, and special corrosion inspection and survey techniques in oil & gas, sector in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. He is currently the Senior Corrosion Engineer of Corrtrol Services Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary company of CORRTROL Group.

Register here or download the form here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.

Shout Out – MOGEC – IChemE’s Fundamentals of Process Safety

June 27, 2011

Can someone sponsor my attendance fee?

Dear MOGEC member , I am pleased to inform you that we are bringing the above training to Malaysia for the third time. Please find the course leaflet for Fundamentals of process safety, 4-8 July 2011 in Malaysia which can also be downloaded from this URL: http://www.icheme.org/fpsmal2011 <http://www.icheme.org/fpsmal2011>

This Fundamentals of Process Safety training course is very relevant to industry. From IChemE’s investigations it was clear that whilst a number of different courses in process safety management are available there were still important training gaps which need to be filled. In particular none of the current courses provide a broad overview which will enable a young engineer or a manager to appreciate how the individual elements of process safety need to be combined to deliver practical results. In addition it is unlikely that an engineer who does not plan to specialise in process safety will be able to attend more than one or two of the specialist courses. It was this thinking that lead to the decision by the IChemE to develop a new course based upon contributions of many leading companies – BP, GSK, INEOS, Yule Catto, Health & Safety Executive (UK) and others. The course content has been designed in the UK to cover broadly all key elements of process safety, and to reflect on real life practice and case studies from the process industries.

IChemE in Malaysia brought this course here in June 2009 and it was very well attended. Participants came from organizations such as Ecogreen Oleochemicals, Emery Oleochemicals, Hess, KLK, MOX-Linde, Pacific Oleochemicals, PETRONAS, Revertex, Schaefer Kalk, Synthomer, Taiko, Talisman and the University of Nottingham (Malaysia campus).

From Borneo Post – Pengerang LNG terminal operations likely to boost Petronas Gas’ revenue

June 26, 2011

Johorians rejoice. What onshore gas field? Dateline 2011-06-10:

Petronas Gas Bhd (Petronas Gas) will likely get to generate more revenue from operating the liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Pengerang, Johore as well as from transporting more imported gas.

To recap, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) confirmed that it would be proceeding with a 3.8 million-tonne per annum LNG terminal for the importation and regasification of LNG in Pengerang, Johore as part of its US$20 billion Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project.

“The terminal, which will be completed by 2016, is likely to be located onshore, unlike its Melaka counterpart. Separately, the company also said it will soon announce a gas field development offshore Peninsular Malaysia with gas lasting 10 to 15 years,” said OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research), head of research Chris Eng in a research note yesterday.
