Shout Out – Talk on Onshore Pipeline Engineering And Mechanical Integrity

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a talk on the 12th July, 2012. It’ll be at 5:30 pm  (makan-makan at 5:00). There is a lift at Wisma IEM.

Pipeline is the widely-used medium of transportation for liquid or gas from a supplier to its customer over a considerable distance. It is generally selected due to its reliability and cost benefits. There are various types of pipelines used and these are selected based on their specific intended requirements. The professionals involved in designing, operating and maintaining these pipelines are generally referred to Pipeline Engineers.

Pipeline Engineering requires multi-discipline engineering skills which involve many subject matters learned during an individual’s years in college. However, not many have the opportunity to apply the knowledge into Pipeline Engineering, especially applying the importance of mechanical stress-strain design, which is the essential item in pipeline system integrity.

The speaker will discuss several important considerations specifically for pipeline design. This includes the standards and guidelines, sizing, wall thickness selection and verification, material grade selection, buoyancy control. Several pipeline failure cases will also be shared to show the consequences when design integrity is compromised.

Ir. Mohd Nasahie Akbar Ali is a Manager for Pipeline Engineering Group at PETRONAS Gas Bhd.(PGB), a public-listed gas and utilities company that processes, transports and handles an estimated of 2200 mmscfd (million standard cubic feet per day) of gas for the power producers and other industries in Malaysia.
