I recently visited the Taman Rekreasi Air Panas. There’s a hot water swimming pool there. Let’s see where safety practices for public facilities are different from the industry:
- Water enters the pool close to boiling temperature at one end. No indicators are available showing that temperatures are above comfort levels, nor warnings posted to the effect that ‘Swim here at your peril.’
- No TAH alarms
- No TAHH shutdown
- No Human Intervention for Public Protection System (HIPPS) visible, i.e. no lifeguards
Apply what you learn at work to your day to day activities. Or avoid swimming in hot pools.

Not interested in safety practices but where to ‘Peep’
hans: I did says this was a public pool in Malaysia, right? However, if you have suggestions from your own SOP…
If someone wants to swim in a pool where you can see the steam coming out, he has the “niat” to cool his eggs.
Of all the hazards that Malaysians face everyday, hot springs is the only one you can think of?
Coming from an Oil & Gas engineer, I expect something more.
Here in Malaysia, we normal folks see these thing as part and parcel of our daily lives:
1. Oversize, uncovered drain. Understand the oversize purpose, but uncovered?
2. Uneven road, potholes, with manholes is actually a hole in the road that should be avoided.
3. Creation of highways all over the place make it impossible to move around without cars or just simply walking or cycling. If you use NKVE everyday, you’ll notice people (foreign workers) walk along the highways. Some even have to sprint just to cross the street.
The scariest part is, most of us is ok with this.
No wonder engineer in Malaysia is underpaid, with the current way of thinking these engineers is worthless.
ah, Mr Bamboozled, hazard is present everyday. Of course I think about it.
even at home, they dig a hole in front of the house, and leave it uncovered. (JKR)
even at home, they cut the trees by the roadside, severing the power cables…..
but what to do? even ah kow knows its not safe, you don’t need engineers to tell you that. who you complain to? In developed country, you take a picture, and send it to the DOSH or ministry, the contractor gets fired. You do that in Malaysia, tomorrow the contractor make sure the power supply to your house is dead, or the JKR just say, “bang, rileks lah, you takde rugi kan? ada yang mati ke???”
mentality my friend….
bamboozled: it is when you are up to your neck in hot water, and seeing the source.
Jabba, you seem to have a first hand experience in the hazards that you’re facing at home. Simply doing nothing and blame it on ‘mentality’ will not get that holes covered my friend.
When you let untrained, inexperienced person run a job or project, you’re gonna get a half assed result. I agree you don’t need an engineer to tell us a certain condition not safe as it is quite obvious, but how did that tree get in the way of the power cables? Why did JKR need to dig a hole in front of your house?
My simple answer, the engineer doing the so called “engineering” is a worthless piece of shit or perhaps Ah Kow is the one who did the initial planning on power lines and road works.
Wata, I don’t know how you could immersed yourself into a searing hot water pond till neck level without feeling the heat the moment your skin touch the water. Just wondering.
bamboozled: you consult long enough, it takes a while for things to get through your thick skin. S have brought a watch with a thermometer in with me.
you’re right bro…
olde uncle jabba had to pay RM150 to get someone to trim the trees….
olde uncle jabba had to pay RM350 for contractor to fix the whole and cover with tar
and who do i complain to? saidin tamby, my assembly man?
Municipal hall person in charge.
Damm him. they never care and all complains go un-answered. The only time they are effective is when I renovate my house. The next day, they came and ask for a permit for renovation. When we show him we got permit, he wants to see a bloody structural drawing. When we show him the drawing with Ir stamp, he ask for structural calculation. When we show the calculation, he complains the dwgs is not signed by a juru-ukur……
At last, the most important thing is the RM50 wang kopi
