Another week, another scan of the Saturday Star newspaper. Here’s a list of job ads in the paper:
- Oo, PETRONAS has a full page advert. Those of you who believe you are worth the skewed starting salary PETRONAS offers (and PETRONAS doesn’t pay engineering companies enough to offer the same skewed salary), please apply. Note that this time round, they are looking for 7 years plus experience. Send your CVs to talent@petronas.com.my.
- Technip, with the tagline ‘Engineer your Future @ Technip’, is looking for structural, subcontract (!), senior contracts (!) engineers. G’won girl, engineer the heck out of that paperwork. Visit http://careers.technip.com.my if you are interested.
- As Jabba reminds me, Synergy is recruiting Lead and Senior Safety Engineers. Send an email to Synergy if you have the qualifications. Very short listed applicants will be contacted. Others: submit at your peril.
Ah, Chee Meng, Chee Meng, the chicken rice shop. Sigh, since I have moved with Synergy out of KL, will you patronise Chee Meng in my memory? I’ll probably be there next Wednesday.

Mr Wata, quoting from you “the skewed starting salary PETRONAS offers”. What does it mean? I’m considering to enter the industry from another industry. Basically a newbie
Alan: it means that PETRONAS is willing to pay their young engineers a certain level of salary, while keeping the service providers’ rates (and salaries) at a lower tier. I’m all for the former, but they should allow and encourage us in the trenches to charge a rate similar to what international companies (read: Western) charge, for the same or better quality of service. MOGEC, MOGSC, how y’all doing?
Petronas pays too much for useless grad.
period.
Petronas hv poor recruitement policies. Many experience Engineers are leaving
Ok what. They pay quite well comparable to other PSC’s – for fresh grads-lah.but it is the opposite story for the experienced one.My view the fresh grad especially in petroleum eng & geology hv the ability to deliver quality work and write & present SPE papers in local and international forums.I say more value for money compared to the so called senior engineers earning 20-30K/month imported fr the middle east and mainland india.Petronas & other PSC’s should be credited for the ability to convert “useless grad” to export grade commodity to the middle east and the world..like mawi.
Advice to fresh graduates: Do NOT apply for PETRONAS first. Instead, apply to other international oil and gas companies operating in the country. Apply to PETRONAS only if you can’t get into the other international companies.
If you are patriotic, maybe you can apply for PETRONAS once you have gained enough experience in the other oil and gas companies.
Most of these companies pay better than PETRONAS does. A fresh grad in PETRONAS will get a little above RM2K or so but a fresh grad in SHELL will get above RM4K. Take your pick. Sure, its hard to get into the SHELLs, EXXONMOBILs, SCHLUMBERGERs and so on but if you are good, you will get it. Good luck.
P/S Agree with ARAH – quite a number of experienced PETRONAS engineers and geologists have gone away, particulartly to the middle east. For example, I have quite a number of ex=PETRONAS friends in Qatar. The last I heard, PETRONAS was recruiting Indonesian geologists.

Fresh grad writing good report is unheard of.
Imported engineers are not always good.
I am ex-Shell, and ALL the fresh grad I see are useless lot, with minimal actual knowledge. If the fresh grad are so good, why do they give millions of USD to Technip, Worley, RNZ, MMC etc to do the design. The only thing they do is check report, ask question and try to learn from people without ever doing something themself.
When in shell, they paid a group of us to come in and support their “fresh grad” to do a small project for 20times their salary. The moment we left, the whole division died. that shows how good their SPE and reporting skills.
I always challenge the PSC to do one project themselves if the disagree.
different issue from fresh grad maa.anyway PSC can do design work but then how UDESA consultant(abv),subcons & freelancer mau cari makan maa, profit margin now already very low one not very untung.that why you pay your guys peanuts.make economic sense to subcon work to design house if not PSC high manpower overhead.cheaper let you guys fight it out in tender bids.I think that why petroleum engineer & geology dept need lot of people everything they do in house one unlike facilities.anyway give chance local consultant and malaysian to make money maa.win-win situation what.back to issue,i agree join SSB/SSPC and emepmi.solid grounding.if kena kick there always petronas.lots of fella from epmi and ssb kena kick in 97-2000 are enjoying life work balance in petronas.some menang court case against former companies too.
