Petronas still driving Malaysia’s upstream

Malaysian state-owned Petronas’ policy of pressing on with offshore development despite the pandemic began to reap dividends around the turn of the year, with reports of several new finds and fresh drilling activity off the coast of Sarawak state.

The firm announced another offshore gas discovery in the area in January, at Hadrah-1in Balingian province. The success of the wildcat followed similar finds at Sirung-1 and Kulintang-1 last year.


Malaysia’s Petronas makes 3rd gas find off Sarawak’s Balingian province

Malaysia’s state oil firm Petronas has made a new gas discovery at the Hadrah-1 wildcat exploration well off the coast of Sarawak state, the firm said on Friday.

The discovery by subsidiary Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd was made at Block SK411k located in the shallow waters of Balingian Province.

Petronas said Hadrah-1 is the company’s third gas discovery in this province, after Sirung-1 and Kulintang-1 in March and May respectively.


PTTEP Makes Another Gas Discovery Offshore Malaysia

Thai oil company PTTEP has made another gas discovery offshore Malaysia, this time at the exploration well, Kulintang-1, its first drilled in the Block SK438, located around 230 kilometers off the coast of Miri, Sarawak.

The company has been on a discovery spree in Malaysia as it recently announced discoveries at Sirung-1 well, in Block SK405B, Dokong-1 wildcat well in Block SK417, and at the Lang Lebah-2 well, in Block SK410B.

As for the latest discovery, Phongsthorn Thavisin, PTTEP Chief Executive Officer, said that PTTEP had started drilling at the Kulintang-1 wildcat well in Block SK438 in March 2021. The well was drilled to a total depth of 2,238 meters in April 2021.
