KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has two ongoing oil and gas projects in its South China Sea exclusive economic zone near Beting Patinggi Ali, says Wisma Putra, denying claims there were objections from China.

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said Petronas’s Kasawari and Shell’s Timi gas development projects are located in the area near Sarawak.

MUAR (Nov 29): Johor launched on Saturday the 3,200-acre Maharani Freeport in Muar as a three-island deep-water free zone, designed to serve regional oil and gas activities along the Strait of Malacca.

Located within the Muar port limits, the private-sector initiative spans across three purpose-built reclaimed islands and a mainland plot housing an energy hub, deep seaport, industrial park and financial hub, said developer Maharani Energy Gateway Sdn Bhd (MEG).

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 12): Petron Malaysia Refining & Marketing Bhd said its Port Dickson Refinery’s product jetty was damaged and partially collapsed during tropical storm Senyar last Friday (Nov 28), prompting a temporary halt in refinery operations.

The refinery’s jetty, located offshore at Port Dickson, is used to receive and discharge refined products between the refinery and tanker vessels.

Malaysia’s Velesto Energy has joined forces with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to bring a new project into play as a structured framework aimed to strengthen safety readiness across the oil and gas industry’s contractor and vendor ecosystem.

The duo has launched the OSH-SURE pilot project, which evolved from Self-OSHWA since 2018, promoting safety standards and contractor readiness. As part of the ceremony, DOSH recognized Velesto’s contribution to the OSHWA self-assessment manual and accredited the Malaysian firm as an OSH‑Coordinator training center.


Sabah takes 20% stake in oil fields off Kota Belud

PETALING JAYA: Sabah is poised to secure a bigger share in oil and gas resources after a state-owned company acquired a 20% non-operating participating interest in an agreement with Petronas, chief minister Hajiji Noor said.

State-owned SMJ Energy acquired the interest in the North Sabah enhanced oil recovery production sharing contract for the exploration and production of oil from offshore fields in Sabah.


Hibiscus Petroleum eyes O&G expansion in New Zealand

McDermott completes Shell project offshore Malaysia

McDermott has safely completed the offshore transportation and installation of subsea infrastructure for Shell’s FaS project offshore Malaysia, that comprises the F22, F27 and Selasih fields off the coast of Sarawak, East Malaysia.

Awarded in 2023, McDermott’s pipelay and heavy lift workscope included the transportation and installation of two pipeline segments, one section of flexible pipelay, pre-commissioning services for all infield pipelines, and the structural installation of three jackets and topsides.

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 26): The expansion of Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (PETRONAS) overseas liquefied natural gas (LNG) investment is seen as safeguarding Malaysia’s supply amid its challenges with Sarawak over control of the resource, said BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions.

“This shift appears driven by ongoing disputes over ownership and operational control. While Malaysian assets remain central to PETRONAS’ operations, its dominant role as regulator and natural gas aggregator in Sarawak is likely to diminish, even if an agreement is reached on rights to the state’s oil and gas reserves,” said the research unit in a note on Wednesday.


McDermott to Build Subsea Pipeline for Malaysia’s Block H Gas Expansion

(P&GJ) — McDermott has secured an offshore subsea contract from PTTEP Sabah Oil Limited for the Block H gas field expansion offshore Sabah, East Malaysia. The project covers the Alum, Bemban, and Permai deepwater fields.

The scope includes engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of a carbon steel pipeline, as well as subsea umbilicals, risers, and flowlines (SURF). The new infrastructure will deliver additional feed gas to the Petronas Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Dua (PFLNG DUA) facility, which began producing from the Rotan and Buluh fields in 2021.


Sarawak to roll out carbon levy next year

KUCHING: Sarawak will introduce a carbon levy on the oil and gas and energy sectors starting next year, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg told the state legislative assembly today.

He said that as Sarawak advances toward net zero emissions by 2050, carbon pricing will become a crucial policy instrument.

“The levy will apply to emissions generated within Sarawak by regulated facilities in the oil and gas and energy sectors.”
