No leaks, no worries: Petronas Gas says pipelines steady after Johor quakes

August 28, 2025

Dateline 2025-08-26, Malay Mail:

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 โ€” Petronas Gas Bhd (PGB) confirms that all pipeline infrastructure and facilities within the affected region remain fully secure and operational following a minor earthquake that occurred near Segamat, Johor, this morning.

โ€œUpon receiving notification of the tremor, our technical and regional teams promptly implemented standard safety protocols that are already in place for such events across the southern region,โ€ the oil and gas company said in a statement today.

As part of these established procedures, PGB said checks were carried out at the Segamat Compressor Station, Segamat Control Station, and along the relevant pipeline right-of-way. No abnormalities or disruptions were detected, it said.

Oil giant ConocoPhillips’ pullout from US$3.1b Sarawak project a fallout of state’s rift with Petronas

August 27, 2025

Dateline 2025-04-29, Channel News Asia:

KUALA LUMPUR: A protracted rift between Malaysiaโ€™s national oil corporation Petronas and the Sarawak state government appears to be causing investor disquiet following a surprise withdrawal by United States oil firm ConocoPhillips from an oil project off the Borneo coast.

In a little-publicised surprise move this month, ConocoPhillips decided to withdraw from operating the Salam-Patawali deepwater oil and gas field that the company discovered in 2018 with Petronas in a 50-50 joint venture that was expected to cost RM13.7 billion (US$3.13 billion).

Special Report: TotalEnergies spreads wings in Asia with Malaysian expansion

August 26, 2025

Dateline 2025-07-02, The Edge Malaysia:

MALAYSIA โ€” with its gas basins, position in the centre of Southeast Asia and proximity to the Far East countries of China, Japan and South Korea, as well as India โ€” is seen as a prime anchor point for TotalEnergiesโ€™ expansion in the region.

The French oil major kicked off its investment here by taking over SapuraOVM Upstream Sdn Bhd from Austria-based OMV and Sapura Energy Bhd last year. The acquisition gave the company operating interest in two blocks off Sarawak, mainly gas fields.

Last week, it sealed a deal with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to acquire a 50% operating working interest in two blocks off Sarawak โ€” SK301b and SK313 โ€” which contain gas discoveries amounting to more than four Tcf.

Malaysia to retain ND6, ND7 terminology for oil and gas blocks, not Ambalat

August 25, 2025

Dateline 2025-08-25, The Star:

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue to use the terms ND6 and ND7 for oil and gas blocks in the Sulawesi Sea, rather than adopting Indonesiaโ€™s preferred reference to the Ambalat area, says Datuk Mohamad Alamin.

The Deputy Foreign Minister told Parliament that discussions on renaming the blocks have not taken place, and Malaysia will maintain the existing terminology for now.

He said the country would continue to address maritime boundary issues with Indonesia through technical meetings, stressing that negotiations should be conducted in a spirit of friendship rather than emotion.

Lessons learned from Putra Heights explosion

August 24, 2025

Dateline 2025-05-21, The Malaysia Reserve:

The blast exposed critical gaps in safety regulation, insurance coverage, planning and disaster response systems

OVER a month has passed since the underground gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, on April 1, which caused extensive damage.

With over 227 houses and 365 vehicles affected and 87 homes reportedly written off as total losses โ€” the victims now face a long and complex journey toward disaster recovery and compensation.

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the disaster, experts highlight the need for better insurance coverage and greater public awareness of personal and property protection.

They also stress the importance of accurate underground utility mapping in Malaysia, as well as better urban planning and more rigorous monitoring of soil movements and pollutant concentrations near gas infrastructure and other high-risk areas.
