PETRONAS and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) have launched the Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (CEFORE), one of the world’s first integrated models of offshore renewable energy sources with energy storage and management systems.

The proof-of-concept facility, located off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, aims to deliver renewable and reliable power by harnessing offshore wind, solar, and wave energy. It also features on-site energy storage and energy management systems to enable a continuous supply.

KUCHING (Oct 1): National oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Sarawak state-owned oil firm Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) were back in the High Court on Tuesday over their gas supply payment dispute.

The two parties had sought a one-month adjournment back in August to make way for talks with the aim of bringing matters to resolution. However, no update was provided on the status of the negotiations when the hearing resumed.

The two companies are in court after Petros attempted to stop Petronas from calling its bank guarantee, as part of payments claimed for gas supply in the state.

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 30): Malaysian oil-and-gas (O&G) stocks are poised for positive performance, bolstered largely by China’s robust import activity as it builds its strategic petroleum reserves, said CGS International.

The house reiterated its overweight rating on the sector, citing sustained strength in oil prices, which have remained resilient despite increased Opec+ production, as a key factor.

“Despite higher Opec+ production quotas, oil prices have remained supported at the high-60s US$/bbl ( per barrel) levels, because China has been the balancing factor absorbing the excess supplies by importing to top up its strategic oil reserves…,” it said in a note on Tuesday.

SHAH ALAM: Eight individuals have been appointed to the Independent Committee to review the investigation report on the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya.

The committee is chaired by Dr Khamarrul Azahari Razak, senior research fellow of the Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Centre at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the appointment was approved by the State Executive Council Meeting and takes effect immediately.

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak must continue to defend its rights on the continental shelf and should never give them up, says state legal counsel JC Fong.

Fong said while international laws recognise the continental shelf as belonging to a country, Sarawak’s rights as a constituent state within Malaysia should remain untouched, The Borneo Post reported.

“Malaysia can claim continental rights to the continental shelf for the nation. But within the country, the states – the constituent states – have their own power over the continental shelf which is within the territory of the respective states.

BALIK PULAU (Sept 22): The price of petrol in Malaysia will remain among the lowest in the world when the targeted subsidy programme begins on Sept 30 this year, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

He assured the public that the subsidised price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre under the Budi Madani RON95 (Budi95) programme will continue to be enjoyed by consumers, regardless of fluctuations in global crude oil prices.

“The subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre is among the cheapest in the world. Even if we eventually adjust to the market rate, Malaysia will still be one of the countries with the lowest petrol prices in the region and globally.

PUTRAJAYA (Sept 22): The Court of Appeal on Monday set aside an interim injunction obtained by Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd from the Kuala Lumpur High Court in January that had allowed Shell MDS to halt monthly payments for gas supplied by national oil gas company Petronas, following competing invoice claims from Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros).

The court also lifted a separate injunction imposed by the High Court that had required Petronas to continue supplying gas to Shell MDS throughout the period, and had allowed a bank guarantee to be withheld.

The latest tender for the Sepat Field FPSO, issued by Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, signals the sustained momentum in the country’s upstream sector. According to AmInvestment Bank Bhd, Petronas Carigali has called for tender submissions for the lease and operation of an FPSO for the Sepat Field, with the deadline set for March 5, 2025. 

The move follows a pre-qualification exercise initiated in September last year, underscoring Petronas Carigali’s commitment to redeveloping the shallow water field located at Block PM313, approximately 130km east of Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

Mubadala Energy has set its sights on developing the significant Cengkih (Clove) gas discovery offshore Sarawak, East Malaysia, with a tie-back to its producing Pegaga (Pennywort) field appearing to be on the cards.

United Arab Emirates operator Mubadala in March 2022 brought on stream Malaysia’s giant Pegaga gas field on the offshore Block SK 320 production sharing contract.
