Analyst warns Petros replacing Petronas as gas aggregator could destabilise system

September 11, 2025

Dateline 2025-09-08, Malay Mail:

PETALING JAYA, Sept 8 — Oil and gas analyst Jamil A Ghani has cautioned that Sarawak’s push for its state-owned firm Petros to take over from Petronas as Malaysia’s sole gas aggregator could pose risks to the country’s energy system.

He said the aggregator’s role was crucial as it determined whether gas resources would fuel local industries or be exported abroad as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“Though technical, the aggregator’s role is powerful. It buys gas from upstream producers and resells it to downstream users. This effectively shapes whether gas fuels Sarawak’s industries or is exported abroad as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Electric vehicles will complement, not replace oil and gas

September 8, 2025

Dateline 2025-09-08, Daily Express:

ON whether electric vehicles and battery technologies will pose a threat or complement traditional fossil fuels in the transport and industrial sectors, Haitham said it is important to put this in context.

“Yes, battery technologies are improving, yes, electric vehicles (EVs) are witnessing growth, but this comes at the same time as an expected huge expansion in the overall global vehicle fleet, which is set to increase from around 1.7 billion to 2.9 billion in 2050,” he said.

“By this time, internal combustion engine vehicles are still expected to account for more than 70per cent of this.

“Moreover, as EVs expand they also face increasing challenges. For example, critical minerals, such as copper, cobalt, silicon, nickel, lithium, graphite and rare earths, underpin the development of EVs.

95% of Sarawak’s oil revenue went to Petronas, says state’s ex-AG

September 6, 2025

Dateline 2025-09-03, Free Malaysia Today:

PETALING JAYA: About 95% of revenue generated from Sarawak’s oil and gas resources has gone to Petronas, with the Bornean state only receiving RM49 billion for nearly 50 years, according to a former Sarawak attorney-general.

JC Fong, legal adviser to the state government, said the sum of RM49 billion channelled to Sarawak might seem substantial but was a small portion of the value of its oil and gas resources.
